Faculty Council Athletics Committee

August 30, 2002

Committee members present: Moder, Murray, Hunger, Yellin, Allen (ex-officio)

The committee members discussed the activities of last year’s committee and the general charge of the committee. Some members said they would prefer to deal with more specific, local issues, rather than broader, national issues. There was some discussion of the relationship between the Athletics Committee and the Athletic Council.

The following suggestions were mentioned as possible items for the committee to undertake:

1. A comparison of the advising services available to athletes and those available to other students.

2. Tracking athletes to determine what happens to them after they leave OSU.

It was suggested that we begin by tracking what happened to athletes who left OSU in 1992 and 1997. Moder and Allen will investigate what information may be already available.

3. Interviews with various students to determine their views on issues or problems with intramural and intercollegiate athletics. Scholarship athletes from football and basketball and from smaller sports would be invited, as well as students not involved in intercollegiate athletics.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 from 8 to 9:30 A.M.

At that meeting the committee will review the committee charge and decide on an agenda for the year.
